Introduction:
A Hydrostatic slide is non-contact in that the slide is supported by a film of high pressure oil, in the order of 10 Um. It functions by producing a continuous flow of high pressure oil through and out of the bearing. The flow rate being controlled by restrictors. The restrictors allow the slideway to cope with varying loads and maintain a near constant film thickness. Throughout the bearing surface, small pockets or pads are machined to create areas of high pressure fed by these restrictors and from which the oil flows ,to the rest of the bearing surfaces before exiting the bearing. The oil is then collected, filtered, repressurized, and recirculated. [Handbook, pg. 294]

Dr. K. (Subbu) Subramanian
Dr K (Subbu) Subramanian is the founder and president of STIMS Institute – a knowledge integration company. www.STIMSinstitute.com He has completed his BS from Osmania University, India and Doctor of Science from MIT, USA. Dr Subbu has worked for more than 34 years in various positions in the industrial sector. While serving at Saint-Gobain he has conceived and implemented a network of technology centres across the globe. He holds several patents, many of which have been commercialized. I first met Dr Subbu in 2014 when he interviewed me for a job position in Micromatic Grinding Technologies Ltd.
Dr. Subbu has been guiding me in my projects since 2014 through weekly reviews personal contacts and on-line meetings. His training lays emphasis on the System Approach which has helped me in visualizing each problem statement as an input/transformation/output system i.e.:
-
To Identify the stake-holder requirements and convert them to tangible technical needs
-
Importance of understanding the fundamental process science to capture the combined effect of all inputs
Review sessions with Dr. Subbu range from science, engineering to management. His guidance is not just restricted towards the project, but achieves a much broader intent of evolving transformational skills required to be professionally successful. Such work force skill development is one of the goals for the position I was hired into.
From Dr. Subbu I have learnt the virtue of patience. When we don’t understand certain concepts, where others may lose their patience; Dr. Subbu uses creative examples from daily life (like situations faced by fruit vendors and dosa shops) to put his point through for our ease and comprehension. He has always been accessible to discuss any issues apart from work. Interactions with him have made me more reflective, considerate towards my own peers and juniors.
